Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back.
What is Pilates?Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through deep postural muscles, building core strength, flexibility and correct alignment of the body. It improves your posture by balancing strength and flexibility thus supporting efficient normal movement, which can relieve unwanted muscular stress and tension.
Pilates at the Clinic
Here at the clinic we offer one-to-one instruction in appropriate Pilates exercises, tailored to the individual client, as a precursor to joining one of the many local classes in the area. Pilates can be taught by a trained physiotherapist to address individual muscle imbalance issues which may be contributing to a patients pain or injury. You will be provided with a printed exercise programme to follow independently at home and we have DVDs available to purchase if preferred.
Some clients attend specifically requiring personal Pilates instruction, others receive instruction as an intergal part of their physiotherapy treatment programme. Pilates can be a very beneficial part of the overall treatment plan as it is useful to both treat and prevent recurrence of a range of postural, musculo-skeletal and neurological condtions.
It is particularly helpful for patients suffering with back pain, once the acute pain and sciatica have been controlled, to complete their treatment programme with instruction in these exercises for longer term prevention.
Here at the clinic, Julia and Olivia have completed extensive training in the Pilates concept with The Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute (APPI), so you will be in expert hands. Olivia has trained with Future Fit Pilates
